Established in 1992, the laboratory has a well-established track record in education, research and technology transfer in the areas of automation and data science, with a focus on simulation, identification and control of dynamic systems.
The permanent staff includes three full professors (Giuseppe De Nicolao, Antonella Ferrara, Lalo Magni), one associate professor (Chiara Toffanin), two assistant professors (Eleonora Maria Aiello, Giacomo Galuppini) and one technician (Gianluca De Felici).
Staff professors have served on the editorial boards of leading international journals in the field of automatic controls (IEEE Trans. on Automatic Control, IEEE Trans. on Control Systems Technology, Automatica) and served on IEEE and IFAC technical committees. The lab's activities cover theoretical and applied aspects.

Theoretical research topics: variable structure control, nonlinear model predictive control, Statistical learning for model identification, hybrid systems, learning-based control.

Applied research topics: automotive, artificial pancreas, Industry and Water 4.0, power generation, lithium-ion batteries, model-based medicine, agrifood.

Funding Sources: Projects funded by the Italian Ministry of Research (including PRIN and MUR projects) or jointly funded by the Italian and French Ministries of Research (France-Italy Gallilée Projet Henry Curien 2020-2022).
Over the past decade, ICDS has participated in several projects funded by European Union Research Programs (AP@Home, HYCON2, INTEGRATE, SEMI40, EcoMobility, MuSiC4Diabetes, FORGETDIABETES). More recently, it is an active participant in PNRR and related projects (NODES, Fit4MedRob, INF-ACT). The lab also has a long track record in corporate-funded research projects in various sectors including: Automotive (Magneti Marelli, FIAT Research Center, Toyota, Ferrari, Octotelematics), Biopharmaceutical (Pharmacia, Nerviano Medical Sciences, GlaxoSmithKline, Janssen, Italfarmaco, Lifecare), Industry 4. 0 (Temis, Logic, Foxboro, Fedegari, Stelar, Brambati, Spin Magnetic Applications, AS Mortara, ASMia), Semiconductor Manufacturing (STMicroelectronics, Numonyx, Infineon), Energy (CESI, A2A, ENI, Plenitude).
